On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. While the path of totality in Canada occurs in southern Ontario through Nova Scotia, a partial solar eclipse will likely be visible in our region of BC.
Because of the risks of looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection during an eclipse:
- Elementary schools should ensure that students are kept inside during the time which the partial solar eclipse may be visible in our area. Apr 8, 2024 – Partial Solar Eclipse in British Columbia, Canada (timeanddate.com)
- Middle and Secondary High schools may adjust their schedules and should welcome students to stay inside for the lunch break and classes that day.
- All staff should review the risks of looking at the sun during an eclipse without proper eye protection and communicate expectations to students (see attached).
Schools are encouraged to explore curriculum-related activities during this unique solar eclipse opportunity.
