Welcome Back! Superintendent’s Report to Parents & Caregivers

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to another school year! I hope your summer was filled with fun and good times with family and friends. I want to acknowledge that some of our families were impacted by forest fires in July and August and had to be on alert and even leave their homes. It was a scary and challenging time, and such an experience can have a lingering effect. The district worked closely with BC Wildfire Services and the community to support the firefighting efforts and will continue to provide support where needed.

As I have said, September brings anticipation, excitement, and even a bit of fear and anxiety. Returning to school is always filled with mixed emotions, and it takes some time to get back into the daily routines. Good sleep, nutrition, and reduced screen time are ways to support a positive start to the year. We understand that we cannot predict the future, but we can do our best to plan and prepare for the different scenarios that might emerge throughout the year. Ensuring that supports and resources are in place, seeking to understand first, asking for help when needed, and showing care and compassion for each other will allow us to meet the uncertainties and the ups and downs of the next ten months. The learning journey is fun and exciting but sometimes challenging, so effective communication and collaboration are essential.

This year, a new cell phone policy has been implemented. While there has not been any real change in how elementary schools have dealt with cell phones, there has been a significant change for secondary students. The intention is to reduce distractions to learning in the classroom. Each school has updated its code of conduct to reflect the cell phone policy. I encourage you to be aware of the new expectations and play an active role in helping your secondary child navigate this change. Your support is crucial in ensuring the success of this new policy. Please speak directly to your school if you have any questions or concerns.

The four priorities in our strategic plan will continue to be a focus this year, and schools are committed to developing student competency in all areas of their learning, improving their physical and mental health, learning and caring for the environment, and building a more collaborative education model. We have dedicated and talented educators in this district who are committed to meeting the needs of all students and seeing growth and development throughout the year.

The partnership between home and school is critical for student success, and we look forward to working closely with you this year to continue improving our schools and the district. I am excited for the year ahead and wish you all good health and happiness. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need anything.

Sincerely,

Peter Dubinsky, Superintendent
